As artists, we’re often way too hard on ourselves. But self-critique doesn’t have to be stressful—it can actually be playful, eye-opening, and wildly helpful for creative growth.
Think of the questions below as your personal treasure map, guiding you toward the best parts of your art and helping you gently refine the rest. Take a deep breath, and let’s explore your artwork with curiosity—not judgment!
QUESTIONS FOR SELF-CRITIQUE
#1 Describe
Can I describe my artwork to someone else simply and clearly?
What do I notice when I view it as an observer instead of the creator?
#2 Spot the Stars
What are the strongest visual elements (color, shape, line, texture)?
Is anything unintentionally stealing the spotlight?
#3 Identify the “Too Precious” Parts
Is there an area I’m afraid to change or lose?
Am I relying too much on a “happy accident”?
#4 Check the Viewing Distances
Does my work hold interest from across the room?
Does it also offer something engaging up close?
#5 Structure, Energy & Tension
Where does the piece feel organized and intentional?
Where does it feel energetic, tense, or dynamic?
Do these forces work together in a balanced way?
#6 Editing Check
Have I removed elements that distract from the main idea?
Is there a clear visual path for the eye to follow?
#7 Over-Editing Check
Have I edited so much that the piece feels flat or overcontrolled?
Does it still have personality, contrast, and vitality?
#8 Distance & Fresh Eyes
Have I taken time away from the piece?
Have I viewed it in a mirror or hung it somewhere else temporarily?
Does anything feel heavy-handed or distracting after living with it?
#9 Form & Content Alignment
Are my techniques expressing what I want them to?
Is the scale right for the imagery?
Do my color choices support the mood or idea?
Am I allowing myself to explore new materials or directions?
The Final Reflection
Does this artwork feel honest, intentional, and mine?
What excites me most about where this piece is taking me next?
